Install Android 5.1.1 Lollipop on Sony Xperia SP via CyanogenMod 12.1 ‘Nightly’ ROM


In this guide you will be able to Install Android 5.1.1 Lollipop on Sony Xperia SP via CyanogenMod 12.1 ‘Nightly’ Custom ROM. The CM12.1 Nightly is packed with all the latest features and updated apps of Android 5.1.1 Lollipop with built in theme engine to enhance user eexperience The Sony Xperia SP is not a new device infact it’s 2 year old and Sony already left the firmware update support, the last update pushed was Android 4.3 Jelly Bean. In order to install the CM12.1 ROM based on Android 5.1.1 Lollipop on your Sony Xperia SP you need to have custom recovery like TWRP or CWM installed in your device. How to install Android 5.1.1 Lollipop on Sony Xperia SP with CyanogenMod 12.1 ‘Nightly’ ROM

Before you Begin:

Disclaimer: This tutorial includes multiple operations which includes Installing Custom Roms, Custom recovery and root. Follow the guide on your own risk, we are not responsible if you brick or damage your device however the chances of bricking a device are rare but you have to pay full attention on the complete guide to avoid any issues and difficulties while performing any of the above mentioned operation.


  • Please ensure your phone battery should be charged at minimum 80%
  • Download and install latest Sony USB drivers
  • Your device should have a working CWM recovery installed.

Process to install Official CyanogenMod 12.1 ‘Nightly’ based on Android 5.1.1 Lollipop on Sony Xperia SP

In this tutorial we are using the ClockworkMod recovery flash process.

Turn of your device and boot into CWM custom Recovery menu by the hardware keys combination or using any third party app (Mostly found in Play store).

Once your device enters into CWM recovery, create a Nandroid backup of your device or follow our guide to create a Nandroid backup (this will create a backup of your complete device including current firmware) if something goes wrong you can restore your previous firmware.

Once the Nandroid process completes, navigate and select wipe data/factory reset.(this will erase your data)

Now it’s the time to flash the CM12.1 ROM on your device. Choose “install zip from sdcard” >> choose zip from sdcard & navigate to the folder in which you have copied the custom file and select it.

Select “yes” to confirm install, wait for a few minutes till the file is completely installed in your device.

Once done with the above step, now apply the same process with the installation of Android 5.1.1 Lollipop Gapps.

Wait for the installation process to complete. The first boot up may take 5-7 minutes.
